Figure painting Workshops

Join me (and 11 other attendees) for a fun, chill DAY of drawing and painting. You’ll leave the Workshops having mastered techniques of the greats like Van Gogh, Cezanne, Da Vinci, and Bob Ross

three Levels of workshops offered:

Instructor Demo

1. INTRO TO FIGURE - CHARCOAL

  • 3 ½ hour workshop is comprised of instructor demos, group exercises, and 1:1 feedback to get participants comfortable with drawing and painting from live, clothed models

    • The first half will begin with 1-5 minute poses and cover fundamentals such as movement, shape, proportion, lineweight, and different kinds of mark-making!

    • The second half will conclude with longer 10 and 15 minute poses where we will practice adding value (light and shadow) to our work, and experiment with using toned paper and white conte

  • All levels welcome, no prior drawing experience necessary. If you have drawing experience and are looking to improve your skills you are also welcome to attend.

2. THE FIGURE IN DETAIL - INK

  • Continue to strengthen your drawing and painting skills with a second workshop focused on perspective and adding more anatomical details! We will learn to use sumi ink, sumi brushes, and reed pens to achieve a loose, lyrical style!

    • We will begin with a series of quick gesture warm ups, then focus on longer 10 and 15 minute foreshortened poses. We will also practice rendering isolated anatomy in more detail, such as hands and feet.

    • In the second half, we will develop skills in portraiture. We will learn to capture the likeness of many types of facial features and bring more personality and emotion to our work

  • Recommended to take INTRO TO FIGURE or have prior figure drawing experience before signing up

3. THE FIGURE IN COLOR - MIXED MEDIA

  • Complete more elaborate, playful pieces in acrylic, soft pastels, marker, and other mixed media in this final workshop.

    • We will begin with a series of quick gesture warm ups then spend the rest of the time painting longer 15-20 minute poses.

    • For these poses, we will learn to elongate proportions in a manner similar to fashion illustrations and experiment with mixed media techniques. Demos will also be given on how to render a variety of garments such as faux fur, metallics, transparent fabrics, plaids and other prints, and explore a variety of fun colors and silhouettes.

  • Recommended to take INTRO TO FIGURE or have prior figure drawing experience before signing up

More Deets

  • All workshops are 3 ½ hours long and use a live, clothed model

  • Materials are purchased by instructor shared between participants during classes. No need to bring your own supplies!

  • Workshop cost supports venue rental, model fee, equipment maintenance and cleanup, and helps me purchase supplies to offer more classes!

  • Limit to 12 participants per session, must be 13 years or older to participate

LOCATION

  • Summer/Fall workshops located outdoors in South Medford, MA and a 5 minute walk from the Tufts Green Line T Station

    • The address will be sent to participants a few days before the workshop date. Free on-street parking is available next to the venue.

  • Winter/Spring workshops located indoors at The Foundry on 101 Rogers St, Cambridge, MA 02142, and a 8 minute walk from the Kendall Sq Red Line T or a 14 minute walk from the Lechmere Green Line T.

    • If you are bringing a car for a Sunday workshop, on-street city parking is free

    • If you are bringing a car for a Saturday workshop, on-street city parking is metered only up to two hours per day. Therefore, you cannot leave your car parked on-street unless you can get someone to move your car “out of zone” for you partway through the workshop. For this reason, on-street parking is not recommended.

      • The best deal I’ve found is the “84 Athenaeum / 245 First St Garage”, located three blocks away and costs $8 for the day. The garage is usually pretty empty on weekends but reservations can be made online if you’d like to secure a spot in advance.

  • **PLEASE NOTE** The location of the May 13th 2025 Figure In Color workshop will be held at Boston Figurative Art Center at 285 Washington St, Somerville, MA 02143, and NOT at The Foundry
